Featured Article Functionality
By Michael Pollock on Jun 5, 2007 in Category 7, Editor's Pick, Featured
(Note: Killian 1.0 and Solostream 4.0 (2-column version) do not have the Featured Article function.)
Featured articles are pretty cool. Especially if you write something you’re particularly proud of and want to set off from regular posts. To create a Featured Article that looks like this one, all you have to do is create a great post, create a category called “Featured,” (also be sure the category slug is “featured”) and then place your post in that category. You’ll also have to change the permalink structure on your site (see here for directions). The theme is set up to select and display the most recent Featured article.
You can display the full post on the main page, or you can display only an excerpt by using the “More” function on the “Write Post” page.
Actually, there’s no more to read here. I just wanted to show you how the “More” function would appear on the main page.

Michael, I have been looking at themes for weeks, and this is the first I’ve seen that has everything I want and the way that I want it. We’re modifying it a bit to suite our own graphics (and I gather that’s the way things grow), and even though I’m generally *not* a coder and stay away from the actual php, I’ve found it simple to tweak things to suit the group I’m trying to set up the blog for.
However, I cannot for the life of me figure out exactly where/how to remove the ‘featured post’ layout for the main page. I want the small (left) sidebar to start at the top of the content loop even on the home page.
Can you help? I realize it’s a bit presumptuous to ask for help when I’m building on someone else’s work, but I’d truly appreciate it if you have time.

A small problem with the Featured block is that type in the tabs gets repeated in the headline (Featured Post - Featured Post). How can I remove the repetitive headline? When I comment out or remove the h3 headline, then the tab text becomes a number. Thanks!

Been mulling over using this theme for a few weeks. I really love the look. If anyone else has used this I’d love to hear your experience with it.

Hi Michael, Thanks for emailing me about my “featured post” challenge. I think I figured out that the problem was that the image I inserted in that post was too wide and it was causing the break. Never thought to consider dimension limitations until looked back at your example here and see that the photo you use in the post is pretty small. I made that change and it’s now working great as you can see in the link back to the blog. Thank you again.
